Stephen is a Colorado State University graduate where he received the first place in the nonfiction category of CSU’s 2014 Creative Writing Scholarship. His short work has appeared in Cirque Journal, Canary Literary Magazine, and Apeiron Review. In 2017 he was awarded The Montana Arts Council’s Developing Artist Grant, which helped to fund his participation in PEN/Faulkner finalist and NEA Fellow and Novelist, Karen Fisher’s yearlong workshop through the Fishtrap Writer’s Conference. In 2022 he received the Big Snowy Prize for fiction. He and his pups, Screefield and Coulee, live in the sagebrush-covered foothills of the Beartooth Mountains, where the Rock Creek watershed spills from Montana’s tallest reaches of granite and empties into the Yellowstone River.
